What it covers

What auto insurance covers

A personal auto policy is built from separate coverages. These are the parts most Rhode Island policies carry.

  • Liability. Bodily injury and property damage you are legally responsible for after an at-fault accident.
  • Collision and comprehensive. Damage to your own vehicle: collision for crashes, comprehensive for theft, fire, glass, weather and animal strikes.
  • Uninsured / underinsured motorist. Bodily injury to you and your passengers when the at-fault driver has no insurance or too little.
  • Optional coverages. Medical payments, rental reimbursement and towing.

General information, not a policy. What a policy pays depends on its form, endorsements and limits, and on carrier underwriting.

Common gaps

What it does not cover

The exclusions and gaps that most often catch people out.

  • Commercial use. Using the car for business, including most delivery work, is excluded on most personal auto policies.
  • Wear and breakdown. Mechanical failure, wear and routine maintenance are not insured events.
  • Belongings in the car. Personal items stolen from inside the car fall under your home or renters policy, not your auto policy.
  • Liability-only vehicles. Without collision and comprehensive, damage to your own car is not covered.
  • Loans and leases. If a financed car is totaled, its actual cash value can be less than the balance owed. Gap coverage is written for that difference.

Rhode Island

Rhode Island specifics

The Rhode Island statutory minimum is 25/50/25: $25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 per accident and $25,000 property damage, or a combined single limit of at least $75,000.

That minimum is a legal floor, not a recommendation. A serious injury claim or a newer vehicle can exceed those limits, and anything above them is the driver's own exposure.

Once you buy limits above the minimum, uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury becomes a required coverage on the policy.

Rhode Island is an at-fault (tort) state, not a no-fault state. The driver who causes an accident, through their insurer, is responsible for the other party's injuries and damage.

Questions about auto insurance

Rhode Island requires 25/50/25: $25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 per accident and $25,000 property damage. You may instead carry a combined single limit of at least $75,000.

The state minimum is a legal floor, not a recommendation. Once you buy limits above the minimum, uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury becomes a required coverage on your policy.

Several things move the number: a higher deductible if you can absorb it, bundling with your home policy, a clean driving record, and asking for every discount the carrier publishes.

An independent agency can also put the same risk in front of more than one carrier. Review your coverage annually, and consider dropping collision on an older car when the premium approaches a meaningful fraction of the car's value.

Usually not. Most personal auto policies exclude commercial use of the car, including most delivery work. Tell us how the car is used and we will look at endorsements or a commercial auto policy.

No. You pay the carrier's filed rate either way; the commission is already inside the premium whether an agent placed it or a website did. What changes is whether one company priced your risk or several did, and whether anyone re-shops it at renewal.

There is no fee for a Gilbane quote and no obligation to move.
