Renters insurance in Rhode Island

Your landlord insures the building. Your belongings and your liability are not on that policy. A renters policy (HO-4) covers them, and Gilbane can write it alongside your auto policy.

What it covers

What renters insurance covers

A renters policy covers what the landlord's policy does not.

  • Your contents. Furniture, clothing and electronics, including items away from home.
  • Personal liability. If a guest is hurt in your unit or you damage someone else's property.
  • Loss of use. Extra living costs if the unit becomes uninhabitable after a covered loss.
  • Medical payments to others. Small medical bills for a guest injured in your home, regardless of fault.

General information, not a policy. What a policy pays depends on its form, endorsements and limits, and on carrier underwriting.

Common gaps

What it does not cover

The exclusions and gaps that most often catch people out.

  • The building. The structure is the landlord's policy, not yours.
  • Flood. Not covered without a separate flood contents policy. NFIP offers contents-only coverage for renters.
  • Roommates. A roommate's property is not covered unless they are named on the policy.
  • High-value items. Jewelry, collectibles and similar items have sub-limits unless they are scheduled separately.

Rhode Island

Rhode Island specifics

Renters insurance is the line most Providence tenants skip, and the landlord's policy does not cover a tenant's belongings or liability.

Some Rhode Island leases require tenants to carry renters liability coverage. Check your lease for an insurance clause and the minimum it asks for.

Flood is excluded here as on every standard form. If your unit is on a ground floor or basement level, ask about NFIP contents coverage.
